There are many wonderful things about the holiday season. There is also a lot of stress and pressure.
I’m betting you started nodding your head when you read that last sentence. 🙂
It’s frustratingly easy to focus on the areas of stress, pressure, and annoyance.
Is the right person making the mashed potatoes?
Is Billy gonna notice that they got one less present than Sally?
How many times am I going to have to fake an answer to "What's your New Year's Resolution?"
The best gift you can give yourself is to Be Present.
That means, when things are draining you or harshing your vibe, shift focus to what is present in that moment.
Instead of worrying that that topic is gonna come up, be present with a conversation you want to have.
Instead of stressing about food logistics, remind yourself that Waffle House is open 24/7 and take a moment to enjoy a nice smell nearby.
Here are the tricks I use to Be Present:
Start with a deep breath or two.
Then, do one or more of the following:
What is here right now?
How would you describe this moment to a sketch artist?
Shift your posture so you are comfortable.
What sounds do you hear?
What do you see?
Stretch 10 parts of your body (fingers/toes count as 1...nice try!)
Scan your body from head to toe. What do you notice?
What do you appreciate right now?
What is important to you right now?
Rub your fingertips together slowly. Notice the ridges.
What do you want from this moment?
